Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: How can I extract just the voices from music?

I have SoundForge 4.5 and would like to extract the voices from a certain CD and then paste the voices into some other music. But the only thing I don't know how to do is extracting just the voices. Can I do this with SoundForge? If so, how? Or what other program should I use?

Hello, consider this stuff. If you combine the left and right channels, and flip the phase on one of those channels, you can eliminate the center channel info, only the combined left and right channel info remains, However, isolating only the center channel info,(vocal),is tough, since it is made up of both the left and right channels, along with the bass, kick, and other center channel info. Now comes (m-s). Because the center channel is most effected when working with phase on the sides, a stereo image can be enhanced, made WIDER, by controling the level of the center channel, with respect to the sides, (done by mixing reversed amounts of phase into to each channel), some software plug-ins, and mastering compressors, support this. But, there comes a point where the gain of the center reaches maximum, and in effect gives mostly mono to the whole mix. I have not seen anything that can recover only the center channel.
hope this helps,
db

Interesting and informative reply from db there ...
The short answer to your question I believe, in case it wasn't clear, is "for all practical purposes you can't" (for all the reasons db explained).
