Subject: new gear?
by s_boy | 03/01/01 at 18:40:29
Hey all
I'm looking to move into a 16 track unit... are any of the new hard disk portables any good. Keep in mind I've been using a Tascam 564 MD for a few years!

Not cheap, but the Akai DPS16 has had some good reviews and there's a lot of enthusiasm for it from owners. I would certainly upgrade to it from my DPS12 if I could afford it!!

Hey Alex, is that you? How you doing?

Yea Dan it's me, I like the new look here.
I am wanting to upgrade to 16 tracks and its really been a while since I've looked at gear. I did not want to make a mistake this time, so I thought I'd ask around and try to get something decent.
Although I still use the ol' Tascam 564 a lot and it does good demo's (and its very mobile). I still would like to get away from the compression problems.
Are you still using your PC a primarily?
Good to hear from you and glad to see your hard charging on the recording...

Hey Alex, went to email you but it got returned. I've been having some problems with my email lately. Or rather my isp has. They said it was fixed>:(
anyway, to get the board to reconigze you you have to log back in. When you log in check the always stay logged in box. Then it really will remember you.
Any 16 trks you're looking at? I know several people love the vs-1680. It seems like the front runner to me.
Take care,
Dan

ok its working as you said... very cool! I am now on cable in lieu of modem and my email account is screwed up as well... it will be a few more days till it gets up an running so it was probably on this end.
I am looking at the Korg D16... I like the price (<1200)and they have increased the HD to 6.1GB.
I also see that the Roland had a VS1880 model. I suppose I need to do some reading up on them. But I would like some discussion on this board, should I use another forum?
It appears that neither come with XLR in's so I suppose you have to use a mixer with them?
Do you still use your PC only? Or do I have you confused with the other Dan that used to hang out on this board...
To Mike F... thanks I will look at the AKAI DPS16i as well. I am looking at it right now in Musicians Friends and it list for $1999.00 (yow!), but it does boast 96khz and 10GB HD, very huge stuff. Any user input would be appreciated.

HEy S'boy,
Looks like you're looking into another all in one unit. I have to say that the Fostex 16trk HDs have pretty good convertors and 24 bit storage now though. Don't know how much they are but Musicuan's Friend has them. You'll need a separate mixer.

hey silent bob... good to hear from you.
I will check out the fostex too. I really am not set on an all-n-1 unit but my budget is about $2K so if I split it out I am gonna suffer in some area.
Are you still analog all the way? I would love to go that route, but the R2R's are too much these days. I looked for used gear, but am afraid to buy stuff used at this price sight unseen...
It's fun lookin around!
I may just build me a PC to do it all...

Hey Alex...
You and I should start an argument. Good things seem to come from our arguments.
How you been, Southern man?!
Subject: XLR on the Korg D16
by Broken_Recor | 03/05/01 at 12:27:49
You're right, I have the D8 and it doesn't have XLR inputs either. Instead of using a mixer, I just use an ART Tube MP preamp and run my XLR mic cable into the preamp. Then use a cable with XLR on one end and 1/4 on the other to come out of the pre and into the Korg. You can, of course, skip the preamp and just use the cable, but the built in pre on the D8 is weak and I'm guessing it's the same on the 16.

Yo Canook-a-mon (eh?)
We do have a flair for that sort of stuff (eh?), I guess it was meant to be, but I have fond memories of it all (eh?)... I am looking to get more involved in recording again, so maybe we'll have to see what drastic measures it will take to inspire Percy to think of something NEW... (eh?)
