Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. For the money I really like the ART Tube MP, but if you're looking to spend more, there are better pre's out there.

Hey Mamabil.  I personally have the DBX silver series 586 dual Mic pre.  It comes with phantom power, a 20 db pad, inverter, low cut, and also has a peak limiter and EQ options.  Plus the fact that it is tube, I think it is a great buy.  I like the sound of mine, and I think you can get them for under $700.  That might be a little much for you but it is well worth it.

Symetrix 302.  Costs around $300.  Good clean and accurate for the price.  If you can find a 202 on ebay, even better.  Their are some mods that can be made to the 202 to make it sound even better.

Hi
If you want a great pre try the Buzz MA2.2 hand made in New Zealand by Tim Farrant. Completely Class A electronics and the most Transparent unit I've heard. I have compared it to a Vintech Neve, a Great River, a John Handy pre, a Dawmner MX 60 and an Art tube MP,Mackie console pres (the old) and my own Soundcraft Series 800 console pres (an old high end unit which sounds great)and the Buzz is definitely more transparent and open than those units. I've used it with AT 4033s, 4047, 4050,Neumann U87,Akg 535EB,421s, 57s, beta 57s, and it makes all those mics sound fuller to my ears. It's hard to hear as it's sold direct but it's worth the money and the best piece of gear I've ever purchased. I also sell them just to be up front but Imade that decision afterIbought one and was knocked out by it's sound. Take care Logan

DBX makes really good mic pre's. and what's great is that they start at around $250 or so and go up. So if you can afford a real nice one, they've got it.  But if not, they've got less expensive ones that still sound great. The features on them like the compression,  de-esser, hi detaii, low detail, expansion/gate are all great.

Hey I use a Presonus BlueTube $150.  I tried the Art and it was noisy and picked up readio stations. BlueTube is not the best but good for the money. Check it out!

Be wary with the Presonus Blue Tube Mic pre's. Apparently they have a phantom power issue that suggests that they do not put out enough power for some condenser mics. I have heard of some saying that it will not power their Neumann mics and therefore cannot use them with that preamp. I was considering one until I read that. I sent an email to Presonus and got a lengthy reply that did not address the problem. It gave me the impression that they know about this problem, but don't want to admit it.

FWIW
