Subject: connecting stereo to PC with no audio out
by Buck | 06/11/01 at 16:02:18
I have a sanyo stereo system, which on the back has connectors for my phono and cd deck, the only extra sockets are for aux in. I would like to record some of my old records and tapes to pc the burn to cd, so i can keep them. All information i find relates to a stereo system that has line outs, which i dont have.
Any advice or hints would be much appreciated, thanks
Buck

I would think you have 2 options the first would be mics in front of the speakers.
On the other hand you can just go down to your local Rat Shack and get a phono to mini jack Y cable and take your outs from the components to the Line In on your sound card. You can use the Mic In as well if you are not getting enough signal strength but quality will be lost.

You can hook the tape deck directly to the line in of the sound card on your computer, monitor out of the computer to your stereo, but for the phono, you will need a phono pre-amp before you can connect directly. Do you have a friend that will let you borrow their integrated amp with tape/rec outs? If you have a tape deck, how are you able to record now? If you have the tape/rec monitor loop, you can get the signal from there.

If your stereo has a "Tape Out", you could run that to your PC.......

Although it's probably not recommended, I have had useful results going straight from the headphone jack to the "line in" on the sound card....keep the volume low and gradually increase it until it is the right level.
There is probably some chance of burning out the little headphone amp, but it's never happened to me yet.
