Subject: 2 Sound Cards
by DJ FIRE | 06/08/01 at 21:59:42
Hi,
This is more of a computer question really, but here goes...
I currently have the Sound Blaster Live in my computer, but because the live only records in 16 bit I am going to be purchasing the M Audio Delta 66 to record my music in 24 bit.
I know my mother board has room for another sound card, but
I would like to know if anyone thinks I might encounter some kind of hardware conflicts in my computer?
I would like to use the Live for my main aplications such as video games and various computer tasks but I would like to use the M Audio for MIDI and recording applications.
Would it be possible to select the M Audio card in the prefs of a program like Cool Edit Pro or Vegas and leave the Live as the default sound card?(Preferably with as little hardware conflicts as possible)
Thanks for your time...

I've had 4 audio cards in my pc without a problem. Setting them up can be a problem if you run out of IRQ's. I had to disable my USB port and modem when I wanted to run all 4 together. Basically I set up multiple hardware profiles.
Your games should still your SB Live. I've recorded with both CEP and Vegas using mutliple cards. It's just a matter of choosing your track devices in CEP. In Vegas, you use the routing grid.

Hi there, I tried to run soundblaster live and logic 5.1 but it would not let me run without creating misc errors in my registry, this could also have been because may cards need updated drivers and the source is not always the best.I removed sblive and things are running smoothly.
Last night I tried to put my sb live into my other comp to swap it as it has a sb 16 bit but the board was a different size and would not take the sblive card. It also depends on what your running, win 98 win 2000 etc, check all spec's and drivers required etc before you put it in...other than that, listen to the pro JR :)

Liana, don't you use Windows 2000? I couldn't get my SB Live to work 2000 either. Nor my Dman 2044 and video capture card. I didn't really see any advantage to using 2000 over 98, so I'm back to 98. Most of the great stuff in 2000 is networking client/server type things. I do like how you can "stripe" multiple HD's in 2000.... basically create one volume who's data spans multiple drives. Totally unrelated, but hey!

Hey JR, I was running win 2000 but my new soundcard audiophile 2496, it would not run as it was not supported, even though it came with 2000 drivers, it corrupted registry. Anyway I went back to 98 despite the fact that it sucks for my work, which is all network related, but my other comp picks it up across network so I can move internet stuff over from my win 2000 computer being the only one hooked up to dsl. There are too many problems with software developers not up to speed with win 2000 for audio software, and many other software products (pretty lazy considereing its a very small amount of code!), its not worth the hassel and the possible corruption especially if you are like myself and have work (accounting files) on that system and I dont want to buy another computer! I run this one for internet with win 200 because I need security to protect client files, therefore it is better to run 2000 and keep as a processing centre for my work and music but it only has old motherboard which is not capable of taking my sb live card...just doesnt fit!! So I cant do some quick recordings on this for samples in collaboration, I have to create all of my samples on my other comp in 98...if I can understand how to use this bleedin delta software..that computer has all my stuff attached to it..mixer, roland synth and microphone ...if you are confused...dont worry, I am too LOL I forget half the time which computer Im on, especially when its also connected to our software development computer on another desk LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL...I think not just the computers but I am developing split personality.. trying to remember which has which sound capabilites, recording abilites LOL...I shall shutup now!!!

I'm using a Turtle Beach MontegoII and a Delta66 on Win98SE.
No problems. ;)

Hey Dan, is the turtle expensive? and also what software do you use to record..does it come out differently with each card? ???

Hi Liana, the TB came stock with my Dell, and has probably been replaced by another model by now. I'd wager it would cost between $100-150Can. The Delta66 looks after all the recording duties, and most of the playback as well. ;)

I noticed that some of you cool folks are using the Audiophile 2496. I installed this card recently and would like to use it; however, they say that a pre-amp will be required to get a signal through mic inputs. Anybody got an angle on pre-amps which would cost little and do much?

I use an ART TubePAC. It's a pre/compressor. Costs around $300Can, but you cay buy the pre only version for less ;)

I am using a behringer mixer which works as a pre-amp, it cost $300 aud but I still cant record on my audiophile 2496 but then again, maybe it records but I cant hear playback...DAN???? you said you use different things for playback...this could be my problem

Ok, Im trying to learn more technical stuff :) I have put back in my soundblaster live and I am also running Audiophile 2496...with Delta logic software. I can now record in delta software..and cubase but I need to put speakers straight out of my sb live card to hear my other files through realplayer winamp etc. this is fine, as I only want to record on the better card, and bingo, I cant record audio on sb without interfering with settings, something thats not wise for the beginner. Only thing I need to do now, is learn levels and also stop recording music at the same time as vocal track...another hurdle I shall jump tomorrow :)
