Subject: Tapestry of Sadness
by Tink | 06/08/01 at 17:02:33
Hi Everybody. I'm a virgin to the Freedom Exchange but I've heard nothing but wonderful things about Dan and the FE. So to test the waters, I thought I'd post a song from about a month ago that I feel pretty good about. It's a dark lyric, and that's kinda where I've been lately. No need to be gentle, I've been critiqued by the best, the worst and some in between.....
Tapestry of Sadness
Cindy Miller
© 2001
Verse
Cheap wine bottle sits empty
On the side table by her bed
It’s become her only way
To silence voices in her head
So when darkness fills the sky
And sneaks into her mind
Amy chases away her demons
One Sangria at a time
Chorus
Amy cries, she cries a lot
And Amy lies ‘bout what she’s not
She’s teetering on the brink of madness
Amy thinks, she thinks so much
And Amy drinks to numb his touch
She endures this Tapestry of Sadness
Verse
The night was made for dreaming
Where fantasies take wing
But in her living nightmare
It’s Hell that darkness brings
She fears the thrusting shadow
Mutated by the moon
That lies atop the rigid girl
Silhouetted in her room
Chorus
Amy cries, she cries a lot
And Amy lies ‘bout what she’s not
She’s teetering on the brink of madness
Amy thinks, she thinks so much
And Amy drinks to numb his touch
She endures this Tapestry of Sadness
Bridge
No one saw it coming or had any clue
Why Amy went crazy in June of ‘92
Some say it’s ‘cause she watched her father die
Held the gun to his head and shot between the eyes
He didn’t leave a note, but Amy holds the key
But she’s locked inside her sadness in a tangled tapestry
Chorus
Amy cries, she cries a lot
And Amy lies ‘bout what she’s not
She’s crossed over the brink of madness
Amy thinks, she thinks so much
And Amy drinks to numb their touch
She endures this Tapestry of Sadness

Hi Tink (is that short for Tinkerbell?),
this is a fine song. Personally I think if you swapped verse's 1 and 2 it may add a little. And the verses seemed stronger than the chorus. Not sure if that's a bad thing or not. It reads well, do you have music for it?

Hey Tink,
I really love the title - rolls of the tongue - great phrasing. However, IMO it just kind of hangs out there. No references that link (other than sadness) in the verses. Seems like it would be stronger if you could 'weave' something in there (although I like the way 'shadow' is used here).
The other thing is that (again IMO) the bridge seems too conversational - too frank - compared to the way you've handled the verses and chorus. It's as if you've blended a couple of different genres - I dunno.
I'm horribly rusty at critiquing and this is what you get when I start thinking out loud.
take care
chad
