Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: Any Ideas ?
by jlp | 06/08/01 at 09:54:17
I do a lot of acoustic recording (drums / guitars / vocals) I’d like to pick up more equipment, but not sure on what I should get. I am a “bang for the buck” type of person. So im not looking to spend thousands of dollars. Just little here and there items. Here is what I currently own.
Behringer MX602A mixer (4 channel)
Alesis Micro Verb 4
Alesis Nano Verb Compressor
Audio Technica 500xl Condenser Mic
CEP
ADA Guitar cabinet emulator
I will be getting a SM57 tonight.
Any suggestions?
thanks

Hey JLP,
What do you record onto? you currently have one mic with a 57 on the way? That is a little shy for recording drums. [glow=green,2,300]Guitars ok[/glow]and [glow=green,2,300]vocals ok[/glow]but not drums. I can think of a lot of useful peices of gear, a little more info would be helpful. What is your goal?

I record into my computer with Cool Edit Pro. I have the sound blaster MP3+ sound card.
Im looking to have a semi-professional recording. Right now my recordings are clean but still need some work. Im looking to make my own CD. I am doing all the playing of instuments and recording for the CD.
I would like to do demos for bands in the (way) distance future.

Mic's, a pair for stereo, maybe, room treatments. Something that will give increased control, and quality to the sound. There are some posts around on 2 mic, 3 mic, drum setups. You can check this site archive, and Deja.com (google Beta) rec.audio.pro, archive.
Just some suggestions,

Jeez, I hope you didn't think that I meant you had a bad room sound, I meant that a trap here, there, some properly placed diffusion, or absorbers, etc. can give bang for the buck. It can make mic's perform better, help improve the general sound, and make the whole sound better, as an alternative to more equipment. Just one of the things to think about. Hope you understand what I meant. Archives at this site have interesting posts on everything from useing 2 liter plastic bottles to movable absorbers.

DB,
didn't think that at all. I have heard that pharse but never understood what it means. I have thick blankets up on the walls of the room. It makes things nice and quite.
thanks for your input
