Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Yes you can, and the advantage is, wide dynamic range, (approx. 85db) as compared to open reel(without NR), very low flutter, and good frequency response. The disadvantages are: (if consumer deck), limited editing capability, or frame accurate editing, -10db audio, auto level control, that you can't turn off, VCR may require a built in, or external video signal recorded at the same time, since the HI-FI FM tracks are recorded with video.(If semi-pro deck, like Panasonic 1980, or JVC BR-800, +-6 frame accurate editing is possible, level control is possible with meters, but, external stable video may still be required. (If pro deck) like JVC BR-822, audio in and out is balanced 600 ohm, +4db, or unbalanced -6db operation, has +- 2 frame editing capability, with TC available, making it frame accurate.
hope this helps,
