Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: Best sound files for voice/music on sites?
by Joey Davis   |   03/01/01 at 03:00:23

What is the best voice/music combo sound file to use on a site? By "best" I mean quickest loading, most easily accesable (plug-ins vs. not) yet best quality. Real Audio? Fast and compact but surfers need the player (granted, most already do but some may not.) MP3? Can they be embeded and play on page start-up with minimal load time? WAV? Too big! I've experimented with beatnic but you still need to download and install a player. Can voice/music combo files be converted to midi?
I guess I'm asking: Most convenient, quickest loading but good quality sound file that a surfer has only a minimum amount of effort to hear (by "effort" I mean do they need a program download)?

I know I'm rambling! Thanks for the help!

Hi Joey,
Not sure my answer will help...but here goes. I let the visitors to my site decide what they would like to do.  I provide both a sample wave and a link to the mp3's for each song.  With a wave of course you have a major file size...but you may wish to provide just a sample (verse and chorus) in the wave format...then offer them the option of getting the whole entire song with mp3 format.
I would also go with Real Player mainly because it seems to be the most popular player or the one most people have already.  I would include a link or icon for the Real Player on that same page with your samples so your visitor can easily download or get the player if they don't have it already. The Real Player site has more info on all the stuff you would need to do to accomplish these things and I would check into their "streaming audio" which seems to work well.
If you want to check out what my listening station looks like, you can go to:  http://members.tripod.com/~chngr/Listen.htm

This is just what has worked for me...it may not be what your looking for but I thought I would add my input for you.  Best wishes with your music!

I'd go with MP3s. They are the best compromise. They don't sound as good as uncompressed WAV files, but they load quickly, and sound pretty damn good. Most listeners on PC sound systems will never be able to tell the difference.

I just figured out how to get 'em on my page without too much trouble. Check it out...
