Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: Software choices - HELP

I'm about to buy a Pentium III with 512MB RAM, 40Gb HD and a WAMI Rack 24 GS.

I want to record vocals, guitar and use MIDI for drum tracks

What software should I buy?

I like the the look of Cakewalk Guitar Studio 2. Any opinions?

Thanks very much

Don't know GS2, but Cakewalk & Cubase are generally good places to start. You'll want to stay away from WinME.
You can't go wrong with the LM-4 software drum machine (Cubase) from Steinberg. 8)

I'd recommend you try the Cubase, Emagic, Cakewalk demos off their respective web sites.  Personally, I found Cakewalk by far the most intuitive and user friendly.  Thier new product, Sonar, might mean some shops chopping out Cakewalk Home Studio and Pro at reduced prices.
