Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: monitors for $500.00 or less?
by Bluzdelux   |   02/26/01 at 15:47:09

Hiya folks...looking for opinions on nearfield monitors in the $500.00 or less catagory(preferably amplified). I don't know if that's a good break-off point for pricing, and I suppose I could go a little more if it meant a big bump in quality. But I'd like to keep it under $500 if possible. I use a hard disc workstation. I need something reasonably small, as space is an issue. What do you like and dislike? Thanks:)

I am using Yamaha MP5's.  They are bi-amplified and pretty good sounding (althought they are the only monitors I've ever owned).  They list at just under $250 each, making them $500 a pair, although for some reason I think I only payed $250 total for both of mine.  Maybe they are $250 a pair, but Musician's Friend now lists them as $250 each.  In any event they are relatively small and a good deal regardless.

Hey there, I use Alesis M1's and they ran me about 400 for a pair, new.  They're self powered and sound pretty good.  Very clear mid and high end but the low end is slightly unclear sometimes.
