Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: Heads Or Tails (This Quarter Is My Home)

Hey all!  Oh, how I've missed you!  New job, new addy and such...I'm anxious to catch up.  (if anyone tries to email me and it bounces back - give it a couple days...there's been some technical difficulties).  Back in March my wife went to New Orleans - I was supposed to be going with her, but things didn't work out - I think that's what triggered the lyric, though my frustration had little to do with the premise, etc.  Anyway.

Heads Or Tails (This Quarter Is My Home)

Chicory in my coffee
These muddy waters linger
Filling up my senses
Till there's only standing room

Chicks in every corner
Tequila in each sunrise
Assaulting my memory
Licking my old wounds

Pick me up and toss me out
On Bourbon Street
Where I can stray
and never be alone
Pick me up and toss me out
I must concede
Heads or tails...
This Quarter is my home

This city's full of stories
The sad, a dime a dozen
But you won't need a paper
To catch the local news

Listen a bit closer
To that jazzy little number
That bittersweet backbeat
Is rhythm for my blues

chorus

bridge:
Heads - the joint is jumping
Tails - it's black eye cold
Heads - you're spent, tails - you're gold...
Either way I've bent my soul

Repeat chorus

.

Chad!!!

Great to hear a new one from you!  You've been missed around these new digs (cool, eh?).

On to the song....

Heads Or Tails (This Quarter Is My Home)

Chicory in my coffee
These muddy waters linger
Filling up my senses
Till there's only standing room

Chicks in every corner
Tequila in each sunrise
Assaulting my memory
Licking my old wounds

[Ya know, I like those first four lines - sets the song up nicely.  But the "chicks" and "Assaulting" lines just didn't do it for me.  Also, though "wounds" and "room" are a pretty cool near rhyme, I think a stronger one would establish the song a bit better.]

Pick me up and toss me out
On Bourbon Street
Where I can stray
and never be alone
Pick me up and toss me out
I must concede
Heads or tails...
This Quarter is my home

[I like this chorus, but got no sense of the meter you might have in mind....  that's ok, it'll come with the music...]  [On second reflection, I do have a sense of it, but its kinda shaky without the music...]

This city's full of stories
The sad, a dime a dozen
But you won't need a paper
To catch the local news

Listen a bit closer
To that jazzy little number
That bittersweet backbeat
Is rhythm for my blues

[Now, that's writing, IMO!  Very nice verse!!!!]

chorus

bridge:
Heads - the joint is jumping
Tails - it's black eye cold
Heads - you're spent, tails - you're gold...
Either way I've bent my soul

[I had a real problem with this bridge.  The last three lines mean nothing to me (especially the "bent soul" thing. 'Course, I've been known to be pretty dense sometimes and miss the obvious.)  And I'm just not crazy about the overall structure of it...]

I think you have the beginings of a winner, here.  Needs some work, yet - but get in touch with Bud and see what he thinks.  He's certainly the expert on these matters!!!!

Great to see you back on the board.  (Check out the RecordingSite too - Dan Monk (Old Dan) has got some great stuff going on over there.

See ya - drop me a line sometime!

John
