Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: windows 98SE lockup
by Maury   |   05/13/01 at 00:11:30

hi all - are any of you pc guys having lockup troubles?  my amd k62 is locking up randomly.  i have an m-audio delta 44, sound forge & little else, but even after a clean re-install, it locks up.  any ideas would sure be appreciated. no conflicts or problems showing on safe mode startups. no problem devices in system info.  oh, btw, when i say "clean install", i mean i typed "deltree windows" at the c:\, and deleted all windows files; then inserted my startup disk in "a".  then the a:\ came up and i typed setup (with my 98se cd in the cdrom) and it appeared to set up cool.  did i do anything wrong/corrupt?  thank you
for any help.  i'm SOOOO close to going "analog" :(

I'm wondering if the problem is because you're using and AMD instead of a Pentium. Most manufacturers and software developers don't test for AMD compatability. Or it might also be your motherboard. I had an Echo Darla that didn't work on my machine because of the motherboard. Those are my guesses. And the only way you can know for sure is to try them out in a different machine. By the way, what happened to your Gadget Labs 8*24?

thanks jr.  yeah, i'm beginning to think that my amd/via mobo combo is the root of all problems.  i still have my gl 824.  i'm having horrible lockups with that installed, so i tried putting in my original delta so i could at least edit some projects in sound forge.  my real goal is to get the 824 working, but right now i have 2 projects already loaded into my pc which need mixing & burning.  i'm thinking a new pentium/ asus mobo combo is a good idea, but my wife's car just died & so on & so forth (insert any money problem here :)).  thanks for the advice & have a nice weekend.

hi again.  i just wanted to update you all on my pc dilemma.  i formatted my hard drive and started over with win 98se.  loaded drivers for monitor & display adapter - no problems, but when i loaded the most recent 4in1 driver for my via chipset (from via's site) THAT'S when she locked up - right away!  i hope this means that the via driver was the culprit all along!!!! i have since unistalled that driver, and installed my gl wave824, and my pc has been running smooth for a whole day now!  i have my nic card installed too. hope i'm out of the woods :)  i also hope this info can help anyone else here who may be reading.
