Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: Fostex  80 reel to reel/bad LED lights
by frannyb   |   05/11/01 at 22:00:10

Help!  I have an old Fostex 80 reel to reel that
has bad lights in several of the channels VU meters.  Fostex told me that replacements are no longer being produced.  Are their any alternatives that anyone out there can hip me to?  Can I attempt
to fix this myself?  Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful. This machine is from 1985(Ser.#0201159)
& is aa 8 track 1/4 in.  The lights in question are LED's (green,yellow & red)that idicate input/output levels...help!

What kind of lights are they? I doubt if they were only made for the Fostex. I'm sure someone somewhere has them. I"m not familar with the fostex machine but let me know what lights they are (model number if you can get it) and I'll try and track them down for you.

Are you talking about the bulbs for VU meters, or LED lights for peak meters?  In either case you might want to check ebay for a parts machine.  I saw an E16 on there for a couple of hundred dollars.  UPS had dropped it and it no longer worked but had lots of salvageable parts.

Have you tried a repair shop?  There are still people around who repair tape machines.  Where do you live?

I had them replaced in the one I owned about five years ago. It was around $250.00 to replace three or four rows. Those led's are very sensitive and fragile so if you over-load them for even a split second they're toast. If you want to keep this one running I would try buying a junker for parts. But the labor to repair that machine will cost you a bundle. I got mine up and running and sold it off to move on to another machine.

good Luck
