Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. I can give you some simple input as I am fairly new to this myself. I am sure that you will get some more info from others. But the simple answer is you can record to your computer using your mixer. However this will not be a true digital recording in the sense of do that you would need a true AD converter and a DAW,etc. But you will gain hi-fidelity depending on your soundcard and computer as well as the ability you use digital effects etc.
Here is the basics and this is what I do:
I record thru my mixer/4 track cassette into my computer (from the LR Out on the mixer to the Line In on the soundcard NOT the Mic In utilizing an RCA to 1/8" Y cable)thru standard soundcard utilizing ProTools Free. Now all I do is use this for ping-ponging (recording 4 tracks and mixing down (ping) to the computer onto 2 tracks stereo and then (pong) back into 2 tracks on my 4 track for dubs, etc.
What you are wanting to do is just a step further than I do and it would require a Full Duplex/Multitracking soundcard and software that will do whatever you want. I recommend you check out the articles page on this website. Old Dan has an excellent article on PC Recording:

Also review the many posts for some great info on software and problems.
Though I am using the computer, I use it only for mastering and mixdown, all of my gear effects, compressor, eq, etc is all analog. I do use some of the effects in ProTools Free but mostly for gain and basic eq.
If you want to play with some recording software check out the Free Stuff link and also the manufacturers links and you can get demos of most programs to see if they will work for your system.
I haven't settled on a soundcard so I will follow this post for my own benfit as well as there are some folks in here that have some serious experience with the stuff and some,I think, Digital is the only type of recording they do.
