Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. Subject: You Believed In Me
by Sarah | 05/06/01 at 00:57:29
This is my first attempt on writtin a song, I need some tips
"You Believe In Me"
I remember the days
When you were always there
You told me I was special
And I was going somewhere
You were always my biggest fan
I believed ever word you said
Now suddenly your gone
And so are the pictures in my head
I doubted myself cause
You were all I ever knew
But deep inside my heart I see
If there ever was somebody that made me believe in me,
It was you
As I sit alone tonight
And listen to our song
I can finally admit to myself
That Ive had it in me all along
You brought out the best in me
You made me realize all of it was true
I just wanted you to know
Anytime I doubt myself I think of you

Hey Sarah
Congratulations on writing your first song! I think Gary has given you some basic but _very_ important advice that all songwriters should keep in mind, whether we decide to follow the rules or not. I also think there's no better way to learn the craft of songwriting (both lyrically and musically) than by _listening_ and then _doing_ (hey, you're only a writer if you actually write!). Try to really analyze the structure of songs by Lennon/McCartney, Aimee Mann, Leonard Cohen, Suzanne Vega, Dozier/Holland/Dozier, Sheryl Crow, Shawn Colvin, Randy Newman etc. etc. These are really solid songwriters who know their stuff, and even if you don't particularly feel attached to their style or genre, I still think they're a good place to start when learning the craft of songwriting. Good luck and keep writing!

Hi Sarah
When you write songs you need to take the following into account.
(1) Structure. Verse chorus bridge etc.
(2) Metre. Number of sylables in each line and which ones the stress is on.
Cheers
Gary
