Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

??? Heloo evenyone, I just thought I'd try out this message board to see if you all could help me answer a few questions.  I'm in an AP Biology class, and as part of the program we're going out and recording bird songs and frog calls and the like and the other day we had a workshop with a few people who showed us how to do it better and gave us suggestions on equipment (cause ours is outdated).  But I was wondering if any of you could provide some information on some equipment that would be helpful.

We would like some suggestions on:
1. Studio Quality sound cards.
2. Parabolas
3. Omni-Mic
4. Shot-gun mic

As you can see, we not in for anything very elaborate. I know I'm being a bit general, but I'm hoping to get a lot of infomation and a broad range of suggestions so we can compare and contrast and try and find the best setup for us.  Also, any one out there who does any wild life recordings I would like to keep in contract with so I can ask some questions try and use your knowledge and information to our advantage.  I thank you all for the help you provide and I look hopefully toward getting lots of feedback.  Talk to you soon I hope.

Sincerely,

If I was going to go out and record nature sounds... which I'm not... but if I was I think I'd use a portable DAT slung over my should and a stereo microphone in my left hand, say a Shure.  That would pretty much do it.  Later I'd dump it into a computer maybe when I got back to home base and compress it so I could hear everything better.

But then this isn't my field.  Maybe people use shotguns... dunno.

:)Yes, well, what we're trying to do is isolate sounds.  Such as pointing a shot-gun mic at a croaking frog and get as close as possible and that way we can dump it on to our computer and we can mark it as, for example, a Spring Peeper.  Thats why I'm interesting in looking for a parabola and a good shot-gun mic so we can get very accurate recordings.  We've already done a few recordings and got good results, but currently we only have an old shot-gun mic and we're looking to getting some better equipment and, most important, getting a good sound card so we can record direct to our laptop in the field and so we don't lose any quality when recording our analog tapes onto our laptop.

Sincerely,
