Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: mono drums
by ds   |   05/04/01 at 17:11:00

I'm thinking of trying out a mono drum sound on an upcoming project.  I'm going to try using a C414 as an overhead, and a 57 for snare and D112 for kick.  Anyone else done similar with good results?  Just curious.

Yes I have done this quit a bit and it works well. Depending on the type of music
If you dont need toms in your face on the music its a great and easy way to do drums and
still have some descent control on the kit.
Just make sure and use the pad and the roll off on the 414 :)

Mono is seriously underestimated when it comes to drums... IMO.  Stereo is great, I love it and use it, but for some stuff it can get flakey.  Good, simple, solid mono on the other hand can really POUND!

Hell I've done it with just a single OH and a kick... sometimes you don't even need the snare.  Just aim the 414 over the drummer shoulder, directed slightly downward at that hole between the snare and three toms... ya know so the center of each drum is basically the same distance from the mics diaphragm.  Gives a good solid picture of those four drums, plus beater attack, cymbals always come through enough.

I think it's good with bands/songs that already have plenty of stereo information... two guitars panned left/right, synths, lots of vocals, etc.  There's only so much stereo info a person needs!
