Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. Subject: Basic recording - audio book
by Dave (Guest) | 02/23/01 at 06:04:32
This IS for beginners, right? I want to record an audio book and have no clue. I assume there's software out there that will allow me to record voice on my computer, edit it, and adjust for volume fluctations in my vioce.
WHAT IS THAT SOFTWARE?
Will that and a good microphone do it?
Can duplicating companies take the digital file that software makes and turn it into tapes and CD's?
THANKS!!!!

Hey Dave
Depending on what quality you are going for, you could do it several ways. There is a program called COOL EDIT Pro and another less expensive version(sorry I cant find the link right now) that would suit you. A good microphone into a standalone pre amp or a small mixer(with decent pre amps)into the sound card of your computer would do it. Check out the articles pages here at this site. If you have a cd burner on your computer, the dupication companies can use that to build your cd/tape. If thats the only project you are going to do, I would hire a local studio to do it for you.Way quicker with better results(hopefully) and usually cheaper in the long run.

Hey Dave, first think about what Percy said. You may be better off doing this in a pro studio. You sould be able to get studio time at $30 to $40 an hour depending upon where you live.
but if this is a project you want to do at home here is the stuff you'll need.
1. Software - Percy was thinking of Cool Edit 2000. I also recommend it. Nice little program. You can get it here
http://www.syntrillium.com/cooledit/index.html
2. A microphone - the Shure SM57. It's the same mic the president uses. An industry standard for years it does an outstanding job recording a spoken voice.
3. A small mixer. The SM57 won't just plug into your soundcard. I recommend the Behringer MX602A.
If you need help setting everything up you can read the article at http://recordingwebsite.com/articles/pc-recording.html If you need more help don't hesitate to ask here.
And you can get the Shure mic and Behringer mixer at Musicians Friend for $79.95 and $99.95 respectively. There's a link to MF at the top of this page. Cool Edit 2000 goes for $75. So for $254.90 you're good to go.
Good luck. What's the book about anyway?
Take care,
Dan
