Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. sometimes you hear a song and go, 'what was in their heads?'. How do these songs get popular?

For instance, I heard this on MTV. It's a 'remake' of Angel of the Morning.

You are my angel of the morning, angel.
Closer than my peeps you are to me

Is that writing or what  :(

A couple fave rave songs I love to hate...

Madonna's "American Pie"

Chris DeBurgh "Lady in Red"

Shania Twain "It's in the Way"

I could go on and on. And that doesn't even count all the stupid bar songs like Old Time Rock and Freebird.

Well should we change our interest from making good music to marketing instead ??

Nah !!

I prefer finding a producer who care about marketing and don't force me too much to change things.

I find that any thing from the "Archies" "Jose & the Pussycats" or any other cartoon band makes me want to hurl :o

So Sh#T turns to doody? I wonder about the rest of the "Words you can't say on TV" list?

I got one for you;

Life is life (can't remenber the group)

Anyway that song has been a hit 15y ago, for a 3 months periode and then ; bang !! It switched to a no no. I played it on a few gigs and it was great, all the people claping hands, and then one more time and it would have been a rain of eggs and tomato !

But what are we doing here ?? Who am I to say a song is bad. There's a style for every taste ? No ? If I don't like Venom fine, I just don't buy the CD. But why crying about it ???

Huh ! Human nature !!

Sorry ! I just juged myself there !!

LOL - what a great post!  You all know the song that tops my list... "I shot the sherrif"  I'm sorry Bob, can you repeat that?  The answer is affirmatively and inevitably... yes.

A more recent pick would be Blue.  Okay, so the beats a little catchy and I've even been caught singing the whole scat...but who wrote that thing? ???

Blue his house with a blue little window
and a blue corvette and everything is blue
for him and hisself (?) and everybody around
cuz he ain't got nobody to listen?

Okay, I don't know what's sadder, that I'm sitting in front of my PC, posting this message on a warm, sunny Friday afternoon, or that I know those words by heart.  :)

Cheers!   ::)

There was a Yugoslavian industrial rock band called Laibach that had a hit in Europe in the 80's called "Lieben Heist Lieben" -Life is life.

Surely you don't mean the same band?

yes, this one is too good to pass up. As has been mentioned good and bad are subjective but I have a personal beef with that Angel song. When I was a kid I had a huge crush on Mariann Faithfull (MikeF's younger sister heh heh heh). Angel of the Morning is PERFECT the way it is  >:(

But there are songs that are just flat out bad. They become hits and then they become jokes (anyone remember 'Afternoon Delight'). There has to be something there for STS to become hits in the first place  ???

Subject: Re: Songs that Suck
by Jon_B   |   04/28/01 at 14:01:48

The thing that there is in the first place for STS to become hits is millions of people who are, how shall we say, nonjudgemental? In Sink; The Side Street Boys; Krikey!! There are entire categories, don't even get me started! A lot of stuff just doesn't show any imagination or originality. And that electronically reconstituted Disco!  :-X

That "angel of the Morning" remake . . . someone forgot to mention it was done over a rather popular Steve Miller Riff as well . . . "some people call me a space cowboy" . . . . yeah . . .. sickening indeed.

Music that SUCKS: Anything by Britney Spears and her look alikes (aka Christine Aguilara, Jessica Simpson, etc, and all the Boy/Girl "bands" especially the ever sickening "Dream" and "Eden's Crush". When will the insanity stop?

Somebody Save Me. I need a Cinderella as I go Round and Round with this Ratt. I wish to be in Nirvana but I smell too much Teenage Spirit coming from that Soundgarden. What a Hole! Someone call a Foo Fighter before I reach for the Pearl Jam to spread on my Barenaked Ladies. Sounds kinky to me eh? What a Rush!

I could go on, but I'll sicken you more. By the way, any band referenced in that last blurb does not suck, in case you didn't know that already!

Get Disturbed. Get Rammstein. Get Scrape. and by God get some Fear Factory. You'll never be the same!

This afternoon, I ran into my father in a local record store and he was looking for the best price for the "Bodyguard" soundtrack.  I know how he is!  he's going to repeat "I will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston to death!  I'm glad I don't have to live with him!

Didn't Merilee Rush & The turnabouts do "Angel Of The Morning" back in '68?  Did Marrianne faithful do it first?

More crap to add to the list:
"Run, Joey, Run"-David Geddes-1975
"Bye, Bye, Bye"-er, one of those boy-bands
"Drift Away"-Dobie Gray-1973
"Eye Of The Tiger"-Survivor-1982
"Escape (The Pina Colada Song)"-Rupert Holmes-1979
any ballads by Journey
"Candle In The Wind"-Elton John
"Brick House"-Commodores-1976
"Ebony And Ivory"-Paul McCartney & Stevie Wonder-1982
-speaking of the little Wonder:
"Isn't She Lovely"-1977
"I Just called To say I Love You"-1984
"Part Time Lover"-1986

I'd better stop now because i'm just getting started! :P
