Subject: preamp kits or designs
by ds | 02/23/01 at 16:20:05
I built the Paia tube preamp last year and after some mods it sounds pretty nice (WAY better than my Mackie board preamps...). Now I think I'm ready to do another one, but I'd rather try a different design, not necessarily tube. Does anyone have any links to other preamp kits and/or schematics?
Thanks!

Hey ds, where do you get these Paia kits from. I've heard they also have a decent headphone amp that I wouldn't mind trying.

Tim, I built the headphone kit a couple of years ago. It runs about $85 U.S. and has 6 stereo channels. If you can solder chips & resistors, it's not bad. I just spent an hour here and there working on it instead of a marathon building session. I think it took me a week or two to build. I think the price is pretty good compared to prebuilt headphone amps with that many channels. I can definitely get more volume than I need, so distortion is not a problem either.
Here's the kit: http://www.paia.com/hda.htm

Hey Steve, have you by any chance heard the Samson Q5? It is a fairly cheap 5 channel headphone amp that I've been using for the past couple of years. I think I am outgrowing it now and wonder if the Paia sounds much better. I would like the extra channel though.
Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I did some more checking on the net and I haven't come up with anything reasonable yet. I found one guy's site who has a kit he based on an API preamp, but it's pricey for the parts and he seems to be a slightly uh, "unbalanced" personality based on what I saw of his web page. :P Who knows?
