Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

I was at the bookstore and was overwhelmed by all of the music biz books. To help me whittle it down what are some good choices? I am interested in one or two that would give me the most info on organizing for tax purposes managment.
Thanks

Hi Jim. If I understand you correctly, you are looking for tax info and I can't say I've found a good book on that, but what I did was to speak to a CPA. My CPA had all the info on what I could claim and what I couldn't and had a free booklet that I could take with me to keep track of it all. You might want to get with a tax preparer and see what they have. If they think you may use their services at tax time, they may just provide you with any information you need to keep track of it without charging you anything.

Excellent advice by Ally. If you are going to run any kind of business, you are going to need a C.P.A anyway, and no one knows more about taxes. The best, and most useful book on music biz I have come across yet, regarding contracts,whether to go inc. or LLC, liabilities, etc., would be "Music Law: Running Your Band's Business", available at www.nolo.com

Thanks both of you for the input:
I realize that I did a lousy job phrasing my question. I was a promoter and small time manager / agent many moons ago and was just looking for something that would help me get re-aquainted with the biz end of things and changes in the laws and practices, perhaps even get a modern take of things since the industry has changed so much in the last decade.
The CPA is a definite in any case, but I have learned in business, music or otherwise, being educated is the number one thing especially before going off to a "profesional" if you know what I mean.

Hey Jim, here are a couple I found that may help:
[url=http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0967294002/qid=987668022/sr=1-3/ther
ecordingwebs]The Musicians Guide thru the Legal Jungle It got good reviews at Amazon and it's pretty up to date. It looks like it's more from the musicians standpoint.

erecordingwebs]All You Need to Know About the Music Business which probably isn't :) but it also got really good reviews.
Good luck, and when you become famous don't forget to mention the Recording Website in your Rolling Stone interview ;D
Take care,
Dan
