Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

When you open Cakewalk go to Source where you'll see
various ports..Don't choose midi prots but audio..
it depends which sound card you have...
If you dont see any ports in Source Tab, you'll have to choose them manually in Options/Audio/Drivers...choose which port you want to record...this could solve your problem::::

So you have a sound card ?? (joke)

The manual is very clear about that but what the ..., why not hitting you with the whole thing.

First choose the entry level and the source in the windows sounds mixer. (double click on the little speaker, go options, propriety, click record then ok) hep ! You just found the record settings of windows !! Select line-in and ajust the level. Yeah yeah there's the mic input but don't use that !!! Very dangerous !! OK !!
In cakewalk each track has a source and play back destination. Hold the shift on your keyboard and click in the source box of the track you want to record, each click will change the source (ex; left soundblaster live, right, stereo ....)
Now if you want to make sure the level is right, push the R on the track to be and open the studioware mixer you should see the input level react as you play or sing and maybe when you groove, if it's not right just return at the windows mixer and change the level. Put the level up just before it clips for a good noise/distorsion level.

WOW !! That was something, and all from memory.
Cause man, I'm not even near of cakewalk  ;D

Of course some words can be wrong cause my windows is in french so you got translation up there !

So good luck !!!

thanks a bunch:)i can record audio now,  it appears that i was trying to go into the qron hole ::)NOW HOWEVER, I CAN'T GET THE FREAKING MIDI TO RESPOND.  ME THINKS I MUST BE MISSING SOMETHING IN THE PROCESS OF SELECTING SOURCES AND PORTS. I AM READING THE MANUAL, I GUESS I MUST BE SOMEWHAT DENSE. :-/ ANYWAY I HAVE THIS IDEA THAT I CAN RECORD ALL OF THESE NONCOMPRESSED 4TRACK DEMOS THAT I HAVE AND ENHANCE THEIR SOUND QUALITY.  SO FAR I CAN'T REMOVE MUCH HISS OR RUMBLE.  I UNDERSTAND HOW THE EFECTS WORK.  I THINK I MAY HAVE TO RECORD EVERYTHING OVER AGAIN, WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Maybe not,
Along with all the plug-in available there's the sonic foundry noise reduction. What it does ? It analyse the noise from an noise only part of your recording (before or after the song) and reduce does frequencies in the song. Of course, you loose some of the quality cause those changes affect the instruments as well, not only the noise. But hey !! It's worth a try, download the demo.

Do you have noise when you play back the 4track ? If not, your gain level is to low when you transfer to the PC. Or your soundcard is the cause, change it for a better one.

Bye the way ; You can't record 4tracks at once with only one sound card, you need a 4 track input device as delta 44, 66 or something alike or you do 2 tracks and the two other, then post synch the whole thing. Hard but hey !! You want to be rich.. no ?

;)

THANKS FOR THE INFO ON THE 4TRACK RECORDING.  I'LL TRY WHAT YOU SUGGESTED.  RIGHT NOW I'M HAVING A PROBLEM DOING A MIDI TRACK FROM MY KEYBOARD AND ALSO TRYING TO APPLY THE SESSION DRUMMER TO A TRACK.

FIRST OFF, I WILL GET DOUBLED SOUNDS FROM MY KEYBOARD.  I WAN'T TO USE THE DRUM SOUNDS FROM IT AND LAY IN A TRACK BUT I CAN'T GET THE DRUMS TO SOUND BY THEMESELVES WITHOUT AN EXTRA SOUND LIKE BASS OR PIANO.  I HAV A YAMAHA PSR-330.  SECONDLY, WHEN I TRY TO APPLY EFFECTS AFTER DOING A DRUM PATTERN IN THE SESSION DRUMMER, I WILL GO TO CONSOLE VEIW AND TRY TO CLICK ON APPLY EFFECTS (FX) BUT NOTHING HAPPENS,THAT BUTTON IS GRAYED OUT.  ANY IDEAS.  OH! AND HOW DO YOU ADD LEAD GUITAR SUSTAIN WHILE RECORDING.  ?????????

I can answer the first part right away. You seem to have a MIDI problem. You surely know each midi tracks should have a midi in (usally set to omni to receive from all channels) and a midi out. If your drum is on the midi channel 10 and the output is set on external midi device, all devices set to receive on channel 10 will play. Where the piano or bass come from ?? Find the unit and change it's midi in channel number. Only the drum sounds should be on the drum midi channel. ( your keyboard can be on omni midi in too )

I had a problem like that a few years ago. I had 3 sound modules with 8 mutitrimbal channel each and only 16 midi channels from the pc. I learned to be carefull to set the module's midi input to the right channel and desactivate the remaining input in the modules.

For the effects you should tell me more on how you apply them. If you are in the console, on the top of each track (midi or audio) there's a box to put real time effect (easy to undo). But carefull, you can't put audio effects to midi tracks and either put midi effects to audio tracks. And of cource if you put an effect and the keyboard can't do it, you can't ear it. ( midi delays are easy, it repeats notes at a lower velocity but reverb and chorus call for an hardware device and maybe the reverb of the keyboard can't be externaly or midi controled)

You should read on midi language, alot of sites are on the subject.

Good luck !;)
