Ok - the bad news... my PC took a shit on me yesterday & I have to reload Windows. the good news... my father-in-law is coming over Sunday and he'll install my choice of 98,2000 or ME. Now I know you experts are out there somewhere & you've always come through for me (and each other). Which version is the one of choice for stable multitracking? I searched the archives here, but didn't find a sloution yet. BTW, I have an 450mhz AMD K62, 128meg ram 10gig HD. Gadgetlabs wave 8/24 soundcard.
Thanks everyone & have a great weekend!

Stay away from win me. I've try it and the audio performance was bad. Of course if someone here as a special tuning for me !!!
Good luck !
By the way, you'll do a pirate installation. ;D
Your father in law certainly did'nt buy 3 different OS. I won't tell Bill Gates ;)

Windows 98 is the way to go. ME sucks. 2000 is not multimedia friendly... it's based on NT and isn't DX compatible and also something about how it controls hardware. Hence you'll be hard pressed to find 2000 drivers for your audio card.

The others are correct, stay away from ME. While Win 2K offers some nice features (improved usage of RAM,etc.) the audio biz isn't ready for it yet. I follow these issues at many of the forums and I have seen quite a few posts of people having headaches after switiching to Win 2K. Win 98SE is still the way to go.

I've seen several posts here now that say Windows ME is a bad thing for audio. I haven't seen any real specific instances of what is 'bad' about it yet. I remember hearing the same kinds of stories between Win95 and Win98. Yet when I went to Win98, I had no problems. Are the reasons for not going to WinME mostly because it just hasn't been out long enough yet for a lot of people to provide feedback about audio performance on?
....p.s.: Maury, it looks like you, Gary, & I are the main Wave 8*24 users here. Do you like this soundcard a lot?

Hi Steve S,
For me it's simple, I passed from a basic installation of 98se to a new installation of ME (A clean one, no upgrade, actually I started with fdisk). So ? First problem was that I could'nt put the same amount of realtime effect before it crashes. Everyting worked fine but with less performance.

.....so maybe WinME hogs more of the computer's resources than 98SE?

yep ! That's my bet :-/
Actually I reinstalled win98se saying to myself I'd wait for the world to come with tips on getting ME run better in audio situation but I did'nt find anything yet.
Well if it's working, don't touch it !

all windows platforms are resource hogs. after a series of 98SE configs, i came across some advice to try 98lite. there is great help online to really use this product (collaboration central)
i did a simple install of the demo right over 98SE, and i got an immediate performance boost that was obvious in audio apps. i will soon configure a dual boot scenario using 98lite. IMHO, you need every bit of your system to run daw apps.

Thanks everyone! Looks like I'd be a FOOL to go with ME:P and 2000 isn't a crowd favorite either! It really means alot to hear your opinions & experiences. I'll let you know how I make out.

PS- Steve S, I just bought a used wave 8/24 yesterday & hope to receive it late next week. I can't wait to try it out! I was using a Maudio Delta 44 which sounds awesome to me, but I ran out of PCI slots, so I couldn't just add another 44. I'm hoping the 8/24 is all it seems. Do you like yours? Any tips/tricks I should know of?
THanks.

If it installs successfully, go to http://www.gadgetlabs.com/ and get the most recent drivers and install them. There is also lots of tips and troubleshooting info at that site even though they went out of business. You always post here or email Gary and I too for any additional help. CEP's multitrack window works real well with GadgetLabs 8 input soundcard. Being able to record 8 tracks at once is the bomb....

I'll second the motion on Windows 98 Lite. Basically it removes the IE Explorer ties from the OS. Windows ME is a hog because of all the multimedia crap they have tied to the OS. Seems kinda stupid to me, but then again, I'm not a rich Bill Gates either.

Thanks for showing the other side of the issue Eddie. I was wondering if someone had any GOOD luck with WinME. Maybe it's more a case of having plenty of memory, processor speed, and HD space.....
P.S.: sorry for the triple post above. I was having problems with hitting the post button and not getting a response......

About the 98lite ??
Is it possible to do the change manually ? If we know what it does ? What if I just remove some stuff myself ??

i just got my kids hand me down pentium 3,and it came with the window ME version.I haven,t had any
problems.I installed all the sonic foundry stuff, cep, cake pro9,and all my plugins. My delta 44 drivers were a pain in the ass to get in.I had to move the card to a different slot 2 times. It finally
went in.I think win 98 is the way to go if you don,t
mind the work doing it,as i don,t think you can
downgrade without starting from sratch.
