Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. Could anyone have any suggestions about Shure SM81, and how you use it. I record with it almost all...
vocals, guitars, drums (hi-hats)...
But I need help with electric guitars. Could and can or can't record an electirc guitar, or should I use SM87....
I didn't try it yet, cause I'm affraid of ruin it!!!

Use an SM57 for electric guitar. You can also use the 81 as a room mic to pick up ambience if you want.

If I recall, SM-81s are good for high hats too.

I guess you could try it. I used it on guitar once like 6 years ago. But not close. Move it like 6 feet out from the amp and use a good sounding room.
