Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

They had to do something.  The introduction of the hard disk MDM killed the tape based ADAT.  They just acted (or re-acted) a bit late.  I would assume that they thought the taped based ADAT would have the staying power to out live a hard disk based unit.  Guess not.  Should make for some decent deals on ADAT units.

You got it Seymour, but don't write off the ADATs yet. The used prices for ADAT XT20's have already dropped $400+ on Ebay, and the HD24 isn't even out yet. Wait til, it comes out and see how much further they drop. Even though I really want the HD24, adding an XT20 for the going price after the HD24 is out on the market, won't be a bad deal. I also noticed that SVHS tape has drastically dropped in price in the past month. So it even makes the medium costs better. I have never had any problems of any sort with my ADATs (touch wood). Remember, Roger Nichols, considered by many to be the worlds premier engineer, recorded this year's Grammy winning Steely Dan CD on ADAT M20's. Alanis Morisette's Jagged Little Pill album was also recorded on three blackface ADATs. FWIW.

That's my plan.  Lie in wait for the XT20s used prices to drop and grab one (or two if I can afford it).  They may not be making them anymore but they are far from obsolete.  It wouldn't be a far stretch to say at some point they may become a desirable piece of "retro" gear.  As far as reliability goes, I have only sent mine off once in about 5 years to be cleaned thoroughly.

Alesis has made several mistakes.  #1 they cut corners on the XT20s.  #2, they should have made the new ADATs 24 bit and finally, they failed to keep up with the times, still selling the same junk compressors, the same medeocre mixer (actually not bad but could have been better) and didn't jump in on the disk based systems.  Although I was really impressed by the Masterlink.  I was hoping it would become the standard for stereo mixdown in place of DAT.
