Subject: Memorable moments?

I am curious as to what have been your most embarassing moments while performing and how you got through it.

Mine would have to be while performing in a highschool auditorium...the microphone stand decided to come unscrewed during my performance. The mike did a quick counterclockwise moment in the middle of the song.  I tried to follow it and nearly ate the mike when it came back around. It then paused and proceeded to go clockwise until it eventually stopped at an angle away from me. It was just one of those freaky things that happen I guess. I managed to finish the song and got it fixed after the song was over.:-[

Oh geez... I thought I was done drudging this stuff up when I went through all that therapy! Battle of the Bands 8th grade: We were doing our 3rd and final song (all Ratt covers!) and at the end of it, I decided to do a big double daffy off the stage and land just in front of the first row. I got a pretty good running start and launched myself kamikaze style kicking my legs like Eddie V. and making all the faces and Pete Townsend windmills and then at the peak of my ascent, my guitar came un-strapped. I lost my balance trying to keep it from flying into the crowd and I landed straight on my back in front of the seats. I wasn't able to hold on to my guitar and it landed right on my head. We did win and I carried the bruises like a badge of honor in my 8th grade big haired ignorant bliss.8)

J.R.....    That's the funniest thing I've heard in a while.....   That accident may have been the reason you won!    ;D

Ally...those mic stand moments don't just happen to you. I've had a similar thing...and so did Stephen Stills when we saw CSNY 2K last year, where the mic stand suddenly needs Viagra and you kinda "follow the mic" as it slowly sinks.

One of my most embarrassing moments...when I was a real longhair in a metal cover band...we were playing the Canterbury in Sarnia, Ontario. The other guitar player was this skinny little dude. During one song, he took a solo, and we got this crazy idea to have him jump on my shoulders and we'd march around the stage during his solo. Well, we did that night after night, until the last night of the gig, I kind of half crouched half bent down so he could jump off, but he rolled head over heels off my shoulders, crashed into a monitor, and bounced (guitar and all) into the audience flat on his ass. Needless to say, we decided to put our acrobatic careers behind us.

Well my embarrassing moment wasnt quite so acrobatic as Tedster,s or JR#97's(hahahahah)but memorable none the less. Years ago I was at some function where I was an audience member and knew the guys in the performing band. Well I had more than a few beers, and was confident as hell when they asked me to come up and sing a tune. I think it was John Denver's BACK HOME AGAIN. Told you it was a long time ago(25 years??). Anyhow they are playing it one tone higher than Im used to singing it. As I start the bridge part, first word is ALL and you really gotta belt it cause its so high(like me at the time)...well instead of the word, out comes one of the most manly belches I ever heard. Needless to say, my face looked like a tail lite. I did finish the song sorta along with jeers and laughter from the audience and band, small town stuff.

Well.......mine was not embarassing until the next day.  Then I realized, after I sobered up, that the drummer and myself had repeatedly mooned the audience.  Of course the owner of the establishment told us that if he ever saw our hairy asses bared on stage again we could never play there again.  Ah the good old days!

This is an entertaining thread, indeed. I have a couple of memories I'll throw in the ring.
Several years ago, I was playing gigs with a 2-bit country cover band in rural upstate NY. We were playing in some saloon someplace, when I spoke into the mic to intro a Patty Loveless tune. After doing so, I heard several chuckles from the crowd, which turned into considerable laughter. Perplexed, I looked at the band and our female lead singer, to find them looking at me in disbelief. Then they started laughing as well. Our singer walked over to me and told me I had just introduced a song by Linda Lovelace...ugh. I remain clueless as to how that happened. And I'm not making this stuff up.
The 2nd incident took place w/ the same band at a dive bar in the hills of NW PA. It was winter, and we had driven a long way thru snow covered backroads to do this gig. Our bass player and drummer were both sick, so we had 2 people filling in. The first set was a trainwreck, as the PA was messed up and we couldn't locate the problem. We remedied that between sets, with hopes that the rest of the night would be better. About halfway thru the 2nd set, it was apparent that the crowd (mostly bikers and local yahoos) were not really into our tunes. Some drunk and obnoxious guy shootin pool kept yellin, "play some f&*king Charlie Daniels!" This was a very small bar, and we had the crowd right in our face, which can be great, or not-so-great if ya know what I mean. Finally, our singer politely stated that we didn't do any CDB tunes, and she apologized for the song selections not being what they wanted to hear. The place was deathly silent (except for the 60-cycle hum from the PA) when someone in the crowd calmly said,"the last band that came here and said that didn't get out alive" My mind went to the roadhouse scene from the Blues Brothers movie...with the chicken wire, ya know? Except there was no chicken wire at this particular venue. We played a short 2nd set, and the manager proceeded to give us hell, and offered us something like 20 bucks to just pack up and get the hell out of town. Seemed like a good idea, so we took the money and ran, cursing our manager (who didn't attend the gig) all the way back home. Yep...those were the daze...

I was playing with a band filling in for their regular drummer.  Anyway.  I was told the job was 2 hours so at the end of the second set I threw my sticks into the audience.  Then 5 minutes later, the rest of the band told me it was a 4 hour job.  I only brought 1 pair of regular sticks for some stupid reason & had to ask for them back from the people in the crowd.

Having recovered from ROTF laughing at the above posts, I have a tale of my own. In my senior year at high school there was a music talent show at the auditorium. Our hastily-put-together band included a "singer" who was good looking, had a voice something like Jim Morrison, but could not sing to save his life (almost literally, as it turned out). As if that weren't challenging enough, the three song set was made up of originals I had wrote, but hadn't finished the lyrics to, so he was left to improvise, which he couldn't do either. I was concentrating on playing (it was my first live gig) and was oblivious to the fact that members of the audience were shouting, cursing and gesturing at our vocalist, and he was responding in kind. Everything was drowned out by our loud music, but at the end of the set,I could see that a brawl had started about five rows from the stage. At that point, someone had shut down the P.A. system, so we grabbed our gear and exited stage left. For weeks after that, people came up to me and said, "you guys were great, but your singer really sucks!" I kind of wish I still had the tape, we got a lot of laughs out of it, except for our singer who had quit more or less at the end of the set.
