Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: Opinions on  AT4047 vs.At4050
by Percy   |   04/02/01 at 23:06:24

I just got back from a car trip with good ol Dad and had a chance to try out these two mics(sort of)in Edmonton. What I discovered was the 4050 is a great mic and has many bells and whistles and works good on my voice. The 4047 has only one setting(cardiod) and is a bit cheaper than the 4050 but sounds better(smooother) on my voice to me. I can save 150.00 Canadian and have a mic that sounds killer on my voice or I can have a very flexible mic that sounds very good on my voice but cost more. Im leaning towards the 4047 as I hardly ever record for money and usually record myself BUT....Talk me outof it guys...Opinions??

The 4050 is an excellent mic.It has become quite reputable in it's relatively short history. I don't know if you tried the mics out in a music store or not,but that kind of atmosphere doesn't really lend itself well to critiquing a mic of that nature.
Based on my own experience, the "bells & whistles" you speak of will really come in handy, once you get the mic home in a practical recording situation.
The variable polar patterns can greatly enhance a mics usefullness. The low frequency roll-off switch can also really clean up your vocal/acoustic gtr e.t.c. tracks.
You should also keep in mind, that the mics will sound different in your studio, than they did when you were in oiler country.

Man that's a hard one, I ended up buying both ;-) and a couple of 4033s. Have you tried the 4033?  It sounds similar to the 4050, but has no varible patterns. A lot of folks, who come into my place, end up liking the 4047 for vocal, but be aware that we often find that it doesn't cut as well when the mix gets busy. For a small jazzy or blues combo or accoustic stuff the 4047 is magic on vocals(with the right voice). I don't like it much for accoustic guitar or amps, where the 4050 and 4033 are much better, in fact the 4033 is hard to beat on accoustic. Hope this helps, take care Logan

Logan's right, this is a tough call. If you are absolutely sure that your main use will only be your voice, and you don't need it for anything else, then the 4047 is probably a good choice. However, I love my 4050 which is very versatile. I have used it for vocals, acoustic gtr, electric gtr, bass drum, overheads, hammond organ with leslie, soprano sax and probably have many more uses that have yet to come up.

Only you can make that choice :)

Good luck Percy

Tim

P.S. how's things up north?

AS a general rule, it is good to have at least one good multi-pattern mic in your studio. Even if you don't have an immediate use for it in mind, you will, sooner or later.
