Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: Studio Cabling
by Frederic   |   04/02/01 at 09:54:37

Greetings,

I am in the process of packing up my "home studio" which is currently spread throughout my small townhouse in CT, and moving to a much larger house, in NJ.  Large enough studio space that I can build a 20x18' console room, rather than using a bedroom, a walk in closet, and a piece of my living room as it is now.

I will be running snakes between the 19" wide racks to interconnect the console table and the racks of midi gear and recorders.  Fiber cabling will not be a problem, I have experience installing fiber and have the TOSLINK fitment kit to melt the ends onto the fiber strands.

What I am unclear on is what type of audio cable I should be using.  I will have one vocal booth in this new location, and can run two individual balanced low-impedance cables to the booth from the console table patch bay, so that is taken care of.  The majority of the remaining cabling will be both balanced and unbalanced high impedance(?) cabling for synthesizers and outboard effect processers.

Has anyone here installed such permanent cabling?  Did you solder on their own plugs, use punchdown blocks before the patch bays, and which gauge/cable would be recommended.  The audio cabling between the racks and the console table need to support 96 balanced inputs and about 24 non-balanced effect sends and about twice that for stereo returns.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
