Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: kick tunnel dimensions

I would like your opinion(s) on kick tunnel dimensions as well as materials you would use to construct it. My studio is small so I would have to rule out anything that I would need a permit from the Bridge and Tunnel Authority for.
Thanx in advance for the feedback.

Well obviously it's the height of the kick drum 22" or so... and the length can be anywhere from 2 feet to 10 feet.

I've used padded sleeping mats wrapped around hula hoops.  About 3 feet.  Also built a rectangle-like extension from plywood, which has a much different sound (woody).  Bob Rock has used a ten foot carpet roll.  You can place the mic in the tunnel, or at the end of the tunnel (barely inside).

:)

I'd like to know what kind of mic is used with this construction. I won't build this if I have to buy a very expensive mic, that can capture the difference it's making. By the way I produce some good bass drum sound already, just looking for options for the customers.

It depends.  You can go 2 feet away with an RE-20, 421 or U47fet and just use a short tunnel for a bit more isolation than you would usally have.  You don't have to spend any money, you just drap blankets over folded up chairs or something.  Rig it up.

Or you can go way out.  If you make a longer tunnel you want to use a condenser if you ask me.  Use a C12, a 414, whatever you got.  Every situation varies.

Thanks Bananahead,:)

Just a last one ! What about a c3000b ? Is it to fragile for bass drum ?

I've never used that mic.  It sound like a large diaphragm condenser.  No mic is too fragile for kick if you're using it 4+ feet out.  It's just when you put a ribbon mic 1 inch from the kick head that you get problems.  Dunno, I've seen people stick condensers just inches from kick drums and not blow, but I'm always pretty cautious.

I agree with BananaHead. Dont use condenser mics on bass drum you could ruin it...I use the old AKG D12 or D112 and both work just fine.. Stick on dynamic microphones...Bass drum has to much of strength and you could ruin condenser mic...
I tried one with NT2 but..)))almost throw
in garabage 700$
