Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: Recording For Radio With Phone Line In

My company is attempting to produce a radio show and tape series in-house, recording on a PC.  We've set up a bunch of equipment as recommended by our previous radio show producer but I still have a couple questions -

-For this purpose do we really need to record to a DAT player and then download it to the PC?  Is there a reason we shouldn't record directly to the PC?
-What sound card would you recommend for this purpose?  We've had trouble finding one that is compatible with Windows 2000, gets good quality sound, and can hook up to the phone line to record phone conversations.
-Finally, can anyone recommend a good resource for digital recording for radio information?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

For this question I would say no to recording direct to PC. The reason being if the information you're recording is very important, a locked up PC would screw you. If you record directly to tape, there's always a copy of the recording.

Windows 2000 is very multimedia unfriendly. Most recording sound cards dont' support Windows 2000. However, I've done a few voice over things through my Sound Blaster Live and Windows 2000 on my work PC (PIII 667 tons of RAM and HD). Software wise, I used CEP 2.1 for the recording and editing. The segments were no longer than 2 minutes, so I'm not sure how stable the Windows 2000 route would be over a lengthy period of time.

Looks like 2 of your questions are already answered so I'll get to the third.  When it comes to recording direct from phone don't do it.  Run the phone through a mixer or at least a preamp so you can get good even levels.  Then run the mixer into the sound card.

Hi there!  I'm trying to do the same thing, a webcast interviewing people over the phone and the levels on that are the hardest part.  I have a 2 channel stereo mixer, DAT, couple of mics... how would I hook up the phone directly to the mixer instead of trying to use a guest mic and speakerphone?

Thanks!!

8)Hey GG; You will need what is called a hybrid telephone interface. This will bring the phone sound
up to the correct tone and level. It will also allow you to present/record a 2 way, with the caller & moderator being able to hear a (mix-minus) composit of the program without feedback. Some of the brands to look for are telos, gentner. This is a good place to start.
