Subject: wireing up digi pro tools to analog console
by Darrell Marcum | 03/09/01 at 13:38:58
I just bought the digi oo1 pro tools. My problem is that the unit will record 24 tracks 8 at a time plus auto mix down etc etc. I have a tascam M3500 console with 24 channels. It has the 8 sub mixes. I am wondering which way is the best way to configure the hook up. The subs are each right and left RCA which means that I can pan for recording but.........Im wondering if I should just patch bay everything or direct in out from the channels to the 8 channels in on the digi unit. If anyone could help me I would be greatful......

do both
normal the console busses to protools so when u select the busses on the console you dont have to patch and you can get direct imput
and patch all the the rest
make it so you can break the normal by patching

Hey Darrell. Ok, here is my suggestion. I would patch all or most (at least 8) of your direct outs to your mixer on the top row of the patchbay. Then patch the 8 inputs to the Digi001 on the bottom row, so they are underneath the first 8 direct outs of the mixer. Then, also attach the outputs of 2 sub mixes to the bay on the top row. Finally, attach the outputs of digi001 to the inputs of 8 channels, preferably 14-16 through 22-24. This setup allows you to send the signals of the first 8 channels of the mixer to protools directly, but also allows you to blend some signals on a submix and then patch that to the inputs of protools. YOu could run the outputs of protools through another patchbay, being on the top row over the inputs to each channel. I hope this makes sense. If not, go read the article on this site about patchbays, or send me an email. You can also buy the Alesis AI-3, which allows you to add another 8 signals to your protools rig via lightpipe optical. The inputs of this would be either 1/4" or XLR, and I think it costs around $300. Good luck. 8)
