Subject: Any ideas for a good guitar/cabinet simulator?
by Daytona | 03/07/01 at 20:38:58
I'll be going directly into an effects unit to record and I'm wondering about any good cabinet simulators. I hear that the Line 6 POD is awesome, but has the Rockman been replaced with something new? I've been out of the scene for a long time and always hated the Rockman sound but I can't use an amp in my apartment. I remember an effect called 'Stack in a Box' also. Damn I'm such a newbie all over again:D Thanks.

The POD rules the roost. I don't know of anything better at it's price point for running a guitar direct. It's also nice when it's run as the front end into an amp, esp. when you can bypass the amp's preamp stage. You can get those nice sounds at low volumes, which may allow you to use your amp if you want to. The POD isn't perfect, but it's pretty darned impressive, esp. at the price....which i hear is going up considerably after stores sell their current stock.:)

I've heard a lot of raves about the Johnson J-Station and the fact it may sound better than the POD. Haven't tried it myself though........

The Pod 6 sounds great and a lot of folks brag on it. Just today I was trying out a Boss GT3 that has some great features and my guitar pro deals in both the POD 6 and the GT3 and he told me while I was discussing the differences and he said the GT3 is nearly transparent when stomping pedals whereas the POD 6 is not so transparent and for about $200 bucks less the GT3 has some great features in the area you are looking for like 14 different Cabinet Preamps and a great feature converting single coil pick ups to humbuckers and from hb to sc. The Marshall Preamp settings are every bit as good as the Line 6's. Not to mention all of the other effects you geat with the GT 3.
To be honest I think the POD sounds great, if I could afford it and another guitar processor I would, but I need the package of the GT3. The thing I like about the most in the POD is the Mesa Boogie emulation, that is awesome!

I ended up buying a ZOOM GM-200. Half the price of a POD and they didn't have any in the store anyway. To me it sounds pretty good. Then again after being away from music for a long time I don't know if I know what 'good' sound like haha. It's got 11 different amps, 4 effects (only one can be on at a time though) and 9 'Output Character' settings ie. punch, edge, live, wide, air, direct miking etc. plus the usual tone settings.

I am not real familiar with the Zoom. After you use it awhile do a review and post it, I would be interested in knowing how it handles. I am pretty much sold on the GT3 and the POD, but I am always open learning what else is out there.
See Ya!

Don't count out the Sansamp stuff. I have the Sansamp Original and love it. Darren Stroud (GuitarBoy and board member guitar virtuoso) uses a Sansamp exclusively for his killer sound.
Subject: Tech 21, Trademark 10

I recently ordered/took delivery of the Trademark 10 for recording and practice. The user reviews (Harmony Central) on this amp convinced me to try one.
This amp is a serious piece of low wattage equipment. Its designed to be a DI/preamp with minimal onboard effects to deal with (XLR out). The amp simulations are analog/solid state and the best I have ever heard in this class of an amp. It will cover clean Tweed (blues/country/rock) to EVH 5150 and some metal stuff (not that I can pull it off).
I hate AC/DC stuff, but funny enough the set-up for that sound is spot on... same with Mesa's, Stevie Ray, Mettalica, etc. The effects loop on this amp is super quiet as well.
Its a "sleeper" product thats been around a while, but I'd never heard of it until recently... its definitely a keeper and coming from a tube freak like me thats a compliment.
I advise you to check out their website.
I will be looking at their Trademark 120 Stereo when it becomes available.
