Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

Subject: Subject - Musicians, Artists....are we different
by Ally (Guest)   |   02/16/01 at 13:05:35

Just thought I would throw this out. I've been told before and discussed this topic with people around me from time to time about how musicians/artists, etc...seem to be more sensitive than other people. (I don't mean in a feminine sense of the word.) What I mean is that we are more likely to have problems with depression, chemical dependencies, etc. as compared to the non-artistic population. Have you found there is any validity to this statement? Just want to get your views on this. Thanks

Whoa, this looks cool ;D...with all the FONT STUFF and all

We are different, yes. I posted on the other board. This one will work well, I believe!

Hey, Ally!

Scuse me, I've got a cold. I'm going to pass out for awhile...

This is a reply to Kevin's "Scale of 1 to 10" on the old board...

So, where would we rate ourselves on that scale of passion? I'd say for me I'd be about an 8. I'm not going to sell everything, quit my day job, leave the wife and kids to go play...and, at my age I'm not deluded about "making it"...but I do live to play, and the passion is much more consuming to me than my day job. I can honestly say that I feel most alive when I'm making music.

Um, that was my scale. I knew you had a high number, Tedster! I think this board is where the high numbers congregate, that's what I like so much about it. I've got pretty much nothing to lose*, I wouldn't sell my stuff(it's mostly instruments and recording gear, anyway). My small biz is flexible, I'd love to give it the total heave-ho. I am deluded about "making it"..lol. I think when you get up around 9 or ten you are not playing the music as much as the music is playing you. You are the part of the instrument that animates it. That can be a hazardous place to be. I would go on tour, if I had the fan base. A lot of people who know what is involved would not, their life situation is not set up for that. But with today's technology there are a lot of other things you can do, most people haven't even scratched the surface.

*including,possibly, my mind ;D

Sorry, Jon B...

My wife would probably say I'm higher than 8 due to the fact that she's always on my case :0

It'd be cool to come up with a little test to see where you are on the scale.

1). A new club opens in town. You

a. don't go to clubs.
b. go to shoot a game of pool and watch the game.
c. talk to the bartender about what sort of music they have.
d. take the owner your band's promo pack.
e. miss your wife's anniversary to take the owner a promo pack.

That sort of thing...

question number 2.

You hear a keyboard player who would be perfect for your band. Do you

a) Ask him if he would like to jam sometime.
b) Ask him if he would like to join your band.
c) Offer him money.
d) Offer him drugs.
e) Offer him your wife.

Or your wife after she caught you with your girlfriend and/or you forgot your wedding anniversary and were playing in some bar instead.
