Welcome to the Recording Forums archive of audio recording posts from the old Recording Website Message Board

Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. Subject: SubT ? possibility
by old_dan   |   03/07/01 at 11:28:11

I'm in the process of setting up the anon ftp so folks can upload songs to REAP and was thinking (a dangerous thing I know).

You remember 'Autumn Jam'? We could do it again only better this time;D We could work on a song using mp3 and upload the parts here. Then the next person could download it, add their part and upload it, and so on.

Just an idea and needs to be fleshed out but what do you folks think?

Take care,
Dan

Since I live sort of out in the sticks and don't really have other musicians around, I'm always up for opportunities to collaborate via the internet.

I'm trying to immagine how this sort of 'jam session' might be set up to keep it from just turning into caos and how to avoid using anything older than 1st generation mp3's in the final mix??

I do think it would be neat to have a Subterranean activity (in addition to the CD projects) that progresses quicker. ie: Projects done in a matter of days or a week.

I like this idea.  Actually, I wanted to do something like this for "Best of Sub-T".
The way Autumn Jam worked was I first recorded a bass line & put it up on the internet.  Then someone would take it into their computer based multitrack and record another track, Encoded it with the first note of the bass so I could sync it up.  Then I'd make a mix of those tracks and put it back up on the net for someone else to add their track.  That way I alway have first generation MP3s to work with and everybody could hear what the mix was like so far.  Unfortunately due to time constraints and lack of musical direction, the whole thing turned out awfull.
I think a 96mbps or higher for mono format should be set as the standard and twice that for stereo.
BTW, I think we need a "back to basics" Sub-T using the guidelines followed by Sub-T 1 (no rules at all!) eventually.
Maybe we should put up a list of Sub-T suggestions in the order they arrive so we can keep track and impliment everybody's ideas.  That way, in 10 years we can still have new Sub-T ideas :)

That sounds cool.  Here's another one for the ever-growing list of Sub T concepts: I know Percy and son are collaborating on the current CD.  I've been doing a little recording lately with my son too and I think both Old Dan and Tedster have done some recording with the kids.  Wonder if there are enough Pop/son or daughter teams here to make that the format for a future CD?

I'll write it down.  Before too long I'll put up a list of Sub-T proposals.  BTW I've collaborated with my father & Big D has collaborated with his daughter.  Also, S'boy collaborated with his wife on the first Sub-T so I don't think there's anything t worry about there.

I second the motion for a general submit whatever ya want Sub T. There are a lot of new people and probably some regulars who would like to submit something without the ever evolving guidlines.

On a similar note, I'd like to see a Classical SubT. Variations, accurate, or parodies of classical pieces. I might go ahead with it anyway and have it be a sub-subT.

Thanks for the suggestion JR, I like it.  I've composed a list of sub-t ideas and this one will have to be vol#13.  Vol #8 will be the back to basics since I suggested that one last year.  #9 is a beatles tribute.
BTW does it have to be from the classical period or can I go older, say Baroque?

Hey Everyone
Just a thought. I was reading posts and noticed there is quite often a bit of sharpwitted humor in posts/replys/whatever which got me to thinkin maybe a subt-humor cd might be an idea. Could be songs/skits/standup routines/whatever. Is this a good idea or is it too far  from center. Would it be in numerical sequence or could it be an offshoot like the xmas cd.s??

Yeah Percy! I'm with you on this one! a humor CD would be cool. I just finished writing a country parody (Check Dan Grays songwriting board) that would work great.:D

By classical, I meant anything in that general genre... classical, baroque, romantic, etc. I'm thinking of doing it seperate from Sub T. I'm not too sure how many people would want in to make it a worth while Sub T. I"ve got 3... possibly 4 tunes ready to track and need to arrange my other 2 ideas. I'm shooting for a fall release. I'll let you know.

I like the idea of a comedy CD.  I took it down on my list.  As far as the classical CD goes, I think if it's going to be hosted by us it should be Sub-T.  If it's just a project by yourself & taking submissions from others too, that's cool.  So can we take a newer tune by say, Ozzy and turn it into a classical piece?  I kinda want to do Crazy Train as an 18th century tune.

I think the classical idea is a real good one, especcially if the rules are lax, and allthough the Ywingie thing has been done to death, the other way around would be cool(Seymour doing a classical YOU SHOOK ME). Hope Im on the rite page??

I would really like to join in with you all this time, because now I have the ability to convert my music into the computer to MP3s.  So bring it on!

Add my vote to the comedy list. That's a great idea and I have just the song.;)
