Home recording and general music post from the archived Yabb Recording Website Message Board. Some of the info here may be outdated but many of the audio recording and home studio tips are still good. Note: The only tags I made and attempt to convert are italics, bold, center and underline. So if you see some gibberish surrounded by brackets, just ignore it.

im trying to record my piano live. i have good mics, a good mackie board, and a good sounding piano. the problem is during playback. it sounds like shit. it sounds like its in a garage. im using n-track studio on my computer (new soundblaster, windows 98). what can i do to make my recording sound "professional"?

Are you using large diaphram condenser mics? Is there a lid of any kind that you can lift that will allow you to get the mics closer to the strings. You say the piano sounds good.Does it sound good while you are playing it yourself? If so,try placing a couple of mics near your head, and let the mics hear what you are hearing.

I have found that close micing the piano is very inportant You gotta mic the the high, middle and low strings with at least two large condenser mics. Then you can mic the sound board and room if you wish and mix it all up!
