Curious, as, the music which defies genres (and there is plenty of it, much of it the best stuff on the planet) tends to be the stuff that wallows in obscurity, while the stuff that's easy to categorize is the stuff you hear sickeningly on the radio repeated ad nauseam...

Frank Zappa comes to mind. What sort of genre did his music fall into? Rock? Orchestral? Humor? Jazz? Fusion? And, for the most part, his music remains a mystery to all but the faithful cultists.
