Bananahead,
Your U2 and REM examples are right on the mark. U2's War compared to U2's Joshua Tree is a wonderful example of what I was referring to in the original post. The same with REM. Personally... I love the Joshua Tree as an album... but YES... it does lack the rawness of "War."
The Soundgarden reference can be debated... but I see your point. IMO, I think there is more difference between "Down on the Upside" vs. "Superunknown" as opposed to "Superunknown" vs. "Badmotorfinger" Soundgarden was an exception to the rule.... musically they got better especially from "Louder than Love" to "Badmotorfinger". "Louder" was more raw in nature... but the songs were much BETTER on "Badmotorfinger". Even though Badmotorfinger was a bigger production... the quality of the songwriting didn't suffer and actually improved vastly, IMO. Bottom line... no souls were lost from the Louder album to Badmotorfinger. Badmotorfinger was such a "different" album in 1991....compared to what was popular at the time... (Extreme, Warrant, Skid Row, Van Halen, etc) Even though "Bad" was a polished/well-produced record... it stuck out like a sore thumb in 1991... when glam rock was about to be trounced by Grunge.
