Funny, but in my own humble opinion, just about the same can be said of ANY genre of music. Even more laid-back forms suffer when producers try to make them more commercially acceptable by burying the stupid record in strings or whatever. I saw the Eurythmics on VH1 Storytellers one night. They weren't my favorite band, but I was watching when (what's his name, Dave Stewart?) launched into this semi-slow, dirty guitar riff. Annie Lennox launched into a slower, but tons heavier version of "Sweet Dreams" minus the stupid disco synth intro that was familiar on the radio. My respect for that band (not that they care) tripled instantaneously. Then I saw 'em on A&E, and the stupid synth intro was back. Sheeeeet.

Another example, although I kinda like Metallica's latest, S&M for an experiment, with an orchestra and all it's probably about the highest form of overproduction. Anything seems more sincere and intense in its minimal rawest form. I couldn't picture AC/DC with an orchestra, although I think it's funny, and great, to watch the Metallica concert on video and see all of those viola players boogeying. But, play it raw by all means. Whether it's folk or metal.
