If I want to write a song and FINISH it, I have to start with a mood or a feel and a story/concept behind it. Then I fiddle around till I find the music that fits the mood (at the same time, phrases are throwing themselves at me, some useful some not). Once I get a general tune, then the rest of the lyrics take shape. The lyrics and the first part of the tune will suggest the chorus or bridge or whatever. But the whole time, I keep referring back to the original mood of the song to keep me inspired and keep me from letting "clever" phrases take me off track. And then, once it's done, I decide it sucks, put it away, and find it again 6 months later and think that maybe it's not so bad after all. Or if it still is pretty sucky, I just send it to Silent Bob and have him turn it into an instrumental!
