Then a melody that seems to rhythmically suggest a certain phrase. That first seed, since it seems so instantaneously pure, is what the song gets built around. Unless it's utter nonsense--which is how I shape the rhythm of the lyrics for the verses: Singing nonsensical syllables until words begin to suggest themselves and meaning takes shape. Then the painful process of sitting down and actually finding the words! But remember: Paul McCartney's working title for "Yesterday" was "Scrambled Eggs."
