I've worked with lyrics first - then melody, then backing rhythm etc, I've started with music first and added lyrics & melody later, and, I think I've been possessed once or twice and had practically everything come together at once and had to struggle to try to get it all down on tape or scat sing it quick before I lost it!
I find no "formula" works. Shit I've even written songs that started with a drum beat and worked up from there....bass....guitar....then melody and lyrics last. And probably every combination thereof.
