if you plan on putting them on CD or remastering them, don't change the bitrate. You want to preserve as much of the quality as possible. If you just want to keep them on you computer and listen to them with normal PC speakers, compressing is fine. Just go to MP3.com and get an MP3 encoder through their site. There's plenty of good free encoders there. Just keep the bitrates above 128KBPs b/c the quality goes way down hill after that. An even better encoder is at

The encoder is DOS command line only right now but I think the quality is worth it.
