Steve Vai used to transcribe scores and scores of orchestral music by ear. That prepared him to transcribe and play for Zappa. Hardly your 3 chords and a cloud of dust composition.
A traditional college education may not look like the ticket to a recording gig, but it can be if you use it right. There are tons of guys with recording certificates/degrees that used to pound on my door everyday. The 2 guys that got hired didnt' have any formal recording education. The one guy was a music major with a minor in communications and the other was an electronics engineer with accounting experience. Both had great ears, but what made them valuable was their non-recording experience. Anybody can learn how to hit play and record. But not everyone can transpose a score on the fly for a chamber quartet sitting there or modify a $75,000 tracking board.
