i need advice on recording careers

Posted by jacob on December 30, 2000 at 03:03:18 AM:

Here's the problem: I'm 15, I've studied electric theory, and sound reinforcement (will attempt acoustics later). I've set up, and torn down live sound for concerts and fairs, I've worked in nice project studios, and have been in the process of building my home studio for about 5 years. I play guitar mainly, but am decent on bass and drums, and I can use several recording programs (mainly Cubase).
I don't really want a normal college education, so I looked into Berklee School of Music in Boston, and the demands on a recording engineer are huge, not to mention hard to get into, AND expensive to top it off. Then I wondered, how many guitar legends and recording experts actually know this stuff? Steve Via hardely has any idea what key he's playing in.

What I really want is to work in a respected pro recording studio, play a few gigs here and there, and do live sound for major bands. Maybe work in the design dept of a company like Mackie. Are the sound engineering courses AT ANY COLLEGE cost effective and will they help me on a day to day basis? I have already learned a great deal "in the field," and by reading books. So should I go on a little theory and basic knowledge of what sounds good, or base my career around expert philosophy??!!
