I'm no expert on the subject, but I once did the same thing and used the finest finishing steel wool you can get. It worked like a charm so long as I paid attention and didn't overrub any one spot (especially along edges and corners.) And I didn't even try to take the guitar apart since it was only the back of the neck I was altering.
