I would tend to agree with BH on this one, especially if the band's material is ready right now. I spent 4 years on my band's first disc, recorded at home. We're not a performing band, so we had the time to devote exclusively to recording. Someone starting from scratch will have a helluva learning curve, buy gear trial and error, and probably take a month or 2 just to get all the gear talking to each other. As BH says, by that time, the muse will have suffered greatly.
