On some boards the built-in mic-pre can be bypassed by partial insertion at the insert jack. Just push the (unbalanced 2 conductor) plug in till the first click. It will stick out a little. This allows you to place the line level signal from the outboard pre-amp directly ahead of the eq section of the strip on the board. Also, some boards have (mic or line switch). But you have to look at your specs, because it may, or may not, still use the pre.
