It really depends what your goals are, what you already have, and how much you want to spend. There's some people who don't have any experience or clear goals going out and buying $5000 of eqpt., but making recordings that sound worse than an old cassette four track demo. Do you see yourself using this stuff years into the future?

If you've already done some recording at pro or project studios, cool. That might give you an idea of what the job entails, and the kinds of headaches you're in for. Sometimes it's best to leave those headaches to someone else so you can concentrate on your tunes. But I don't mean to dissuade you, because recording is fascinating and fun, too. Otherwise we wouldn't be here!

Maybe more important these days than "Mac or PC" is the soundcard you buy to get the stuff into the 'puter. The quality and number of mics you'll need is a very big issue. And you may need preamplification as well. Also remember, a computer isn't the most versatile setup in terms of portability, and you'll probably be doing a lot of mouse clicking. Do some research on the web, and look at some recording-wanker magazines (Recording, Electronic Musician, TapeOp, Sound on Sound) to see what products look like a fit for your needs. And feel free to ask back here about specifics.
