I have enjoyed owning a T238 for three years now. It was overhauled by the manufacturer at a cost of around $500 but that brought it back to 'as new' performance.

There's no doubt that there are other recording mediums (media?) around that are better than cassette, but of its type, I think the 238 is unbeatable. I still use it regularly for live recording where my more modern hard disc-based recorders might be a tad fragile by comparison. I don't know the 688, but if it does use the same transport as the 288, it should be good too.
